Goldenrods for dyeing Piiskuja värjäykseen

IN ENGLISH
Today I have stripped leaves and flowering tops from goldenrods for dyeing. I put them in net bags in big buckets, and pour boiling water and couple of spoonfuls of washing soda over them, and let them sit for a few days before simmering them for one hour and dyeing with the bath. After the first bath I let the used bath sit for couple of weeks during which time there will develop more dyes in the bath (I think all the dyes are already there from the beginning but they are not in a form which will attach to the yarn), and I can dye as deep yellow as in the first time. If I dyed the after bath right the same or following day the color would be much paler.

Harvest time for japanese indigo Väritattaren sadonkorjuuaika

IN ENGLISH
Since the end of August I have been harvesting and dyeing with my japanese indigo almost daily. I still have plants to dye with for next week but then they are all done, and hopefully I have enough blue yarns for the winter. Japanese indigo has grown well this summer, June was cold but japanese indigo liked the hot July and also August was warm, and I think the amount of precursors of indigo in the leaves has increased even during September, at least it seems that I get now even darker shades from the same amount of leaves than in the end of August.

IN ENGLISH
Some of the pointed leaf type japanese indigo and Senbon, which has also pointed leaves, have started to flower, but the round leaf type doesn't show even bud yet. Some flowers of Senbon are pink..

Ja osalla kukat ovat valkoiset.

And some have white flowers.

But most don't show flowers yet.

IN ENGLISH
I don't cut the leaves from the ground so that they can grow more and if there are no frosts I could maybe harvest some more leaves in October, but you never know about the weather. I have also left the flowering stems to grow and cut them just before the frosty nights and take them inside then.

Purkissa oleva liemi on läpikuultavaa turkoosilla vivahteella, kuvassa yllä.

IN ENGLISH
I extract most of my japanese indigo in double boiler in big glass jars, a more through post about that process here. I have so much leaves this year, that I have also extracted some batches of bigger amounts  of leaves in a pot. It seems that when the extraction is done in a closed jar with very little space for air the colors I get are brighter than the colors I get when the extraction is done in a pot where in spite of a lid there is more room for air to get to the liquid while extraction. The liquid in the closed jar is translucent with turqoise tint, picture above.

Tässä ylläolevassa kuvassa uutto on verkkopussissa kattilassa, liemi n kahden tunnin uuton jälkeen (koivunsiemenet eivät kuuluisi sinne, jostain niitä aina lentää), liemi turkoosia, ei läpikuultavaa.

IN ENGLISH
In the picture above the extraction is on in big pot, the liquid after two hours in 65°C, turqoise, not very translucent (the seeds from birches don't belong there, there are so many of them in the air that always some find their way to my pots).

IN ENGLISH
The same extraction after three hours. There is coppery sheen on the surface, which is formed from oxidized indigo. Here some oxygen has entered the liquid already in the extraction and some of the precursors have formed indigo. I suspect that there are also some other chemical reactions with other precursors besides indoxyl which take place or the neutral pH has some effect to indigo formation, and that is why the blue is slightly different shade than when the extraction is done in a jar. It is a good blue anyway so when I have to extract a bigger amount I just use the pot without jar:)
In the picture below there are used leaves in the net bag.

IN ENGLISH
After the extraction I add washing soda to make the vat alkaline and then during oxidizing the indoxyl molecules combine to indigotin. Sometimes there is a lot of foam, other times hardly any foam, and I don't know why, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with how much there is indigo in the vat, because I get good blues even from vats where there was only a little or practically no foam. I can see during oxidizing from the color of the bath how it changes in alkaline environment from brownish green, to turqoise green to dark green and finally to dark blue, sometimes with violet shade (I think the violet has something to do with the temperature during oxidizing).

IN ENGLISH
Above how the bath looks after oxidizing. I didn't take any pictures about the actual dyeing but below are the yarns which I had dyed with this bath.

Nettikauppaan saan uusia lankoja valmiiksi lokakuun alussa.

IN ENGLISH
I have still some japanese indigo dyeing to do next week and then I will take a short break from work (though I am at home and ship orders).  Our summer season at the market ends now and from now until spring my husband is at the market only on Saturdays. There will be new yarns in the online shop in the beginning of October.
