Market days this week Loppiaismyynti torilla

IN ENGLISH
The market in Helsinki is open every day between the New Year's Day and Epiphany (January 6th), because there are a lot of tourists in Helsinki then. Most of the tourists are from Russia because this is the holiday season for them. My husband will be also at the market more because of this: you will find our booth at the market Kauppatori in Helsinki tomorrow January 1st, and at least Saturday January 4th, Sunday January 5th and Monday January 6th.
I have been busy making more knitted things to sell for this short but busy season. The hoods are made with a knitting machine, and hats are partly made with a machine and partly by hand with needles, all are from our yarns which I have dyed with natural dyes. There are also some ready mittens, kits for mittens and quite a lot of yarn, both in natural colors of the sheep and dyed with natural dyes. Welcome to the market if you happen to visit Helsinki now!

In the garden the view is still green and the weather has been unusually warm for this time of year. If I had had the time I would have experimented with the woad leaves which look still so good, but perhaps it is best to leave them until spring and dye with the new growth then. In the right hand picture below there are some dead stems of japanese indigo, still kind of beautiful:)

Winter and a good article Talvi ja hyvä artikkelisarja

Syksy meni nopeasti ohi.

The autumn went past quickly. Last summer was very good at the market, and after that all autumn there has been quite a lot of customers in my online shop, thank you all:-), so I have been very busy with that. There has been no time for any new experiments, even though I have mushrooms and other dyestuffs in store waiting to be used, but I hope there will be time for that in the winter.
I'm not going to any Christmas fairs, only my husband is at the market Kauppatori in Helsinki on Saturdays and right after the New Year maybe also some other days. And of course the online shop is open all the time:)

Yllä olevassa kuvassa on väritattaren varrentynkiä.

This autumn was mild and long, and only last week we got the first snow. In the picture above there are frozen japanese indigo stems. I usually leave them until spring before I take them to the compost. In the autumn their roots are still very tightly in the ground and I have to use a shovel to dig them up, while in the spring they are very easy to just pull up with hands.

Rusakot olivat käyneet maistelemassa morsingon lehtiä.

The wild hares have been eating woad leaves in the snow.

These are not dyeplants, but I love my hellebores which are lovely even in winter:)

IN ENGLISH
In November I was contacted by a person who was translating an article about indigo from Estonian to Finnish, and she wanted my help for some of the words in Finnish. The article was in Käsityö, which is the biggest craft magazine in Estonia and it is also published in Finland translated in Finnish. I wasn't familiar to that magazine and was pleasantly surprised about it, especially about the series of articles about natural dyeing written by Liis Luhamaa, who also writes a blog in Estonian. The articles are very thorough and you can see from the small details of practical advise that she writes from her own experiences, not just something from books. Liis writes also about her own experiments in mordanting and shows pictures how different the color is if it is mordanted with alum (and with or without cream of tartar) beforehand or in the dye bath. She has also about these experiments in her blog, here.
Usually when there are articles in the magazines about natural dyeing they are couple of pages long at the most, and of course they are bound to be very shallow, but this is a series of articles about the subject. In the spring issue there are the basics, the pre treatment of the fiber and mordanting, which are the most important to understand (I think). In the summer issue there is about dyeing yellow, in the autumn issue about dyeing red and in the latest, the winter issue, about dyeing blue. The total 16 pages in the series of articles and all very detailed and well written. Very rarely is there an article this good about natural dyeing in the magazines. The latest issue is easy to buy here in Finland, but I don't know if the other issues are still available, probably at least in the libraries. Even though I was mentioned also in the articles, that is not why I wrote this, I really do believe these articles are very good if you read Finnish (or Estonian), and the great thing is that the magazine has given so much space to the articles and that the person who wrote it is someone who has actual knowledge of the subject, really big thanks to the magazine for that.

I mentioned the link to Liis's mordanting experiments, and here is another link to very detailed experiments in mordanting in Jared's blog FromSilkRoad. He describes his experiments with different mordants, different amounts of alum and in different temperatures, for instance here.
