My japanese indigo has loved this very warm and sunny summer. Plants which I planted outside in the end of May are now looking really good, and I hope they will have lots of precursors of indigotin in the by the end of summer. I already tested with one leaf, like I did here, but it didn't turn our blue yet  when dried. It is too early, I know :) In the picture above there are round leaf variety in the foreground and 'Senbon' in the back.

I planted some japanese indigo also inside the greenhouse, pictures of them in May, here.
The are also very lush, and perhaps too closely planted. To my surprise I noticed last week the first flower buds in them, and the buds were in the round leaf variety, which is usually the latest variety to start to flower. Strange but great for me, I'm sure these plants will give me new seeds in the autumn.
These few plants were sown already in the middle of January when I tested the germination of my seeds, so they have already grown for 150 days from germination, even though some of it was inside under the lamp. Maybe the time of growth (and hot weather) is the reason for these early flowers, even though the day length should be the critical factor according to literature.

Viime kesänä minulla kasvoi väritattaria isoissa purkeissa kasvihuoneessa, ja teräväkärkinen muoto ehti kukkia ajoissa siellä, sain siitä silloin siemeniäkin ajoissa syksyllä. Nähtävästi osa siemenistä oli kypsynyt ja varissut huomaamattani ja itänyt nyt kevällä jossain vaiheessa, koska kesäkuussa huomasin kasvihuoneessa sokeriherneiden (sain niistä kasvihuoneessa aikaisemmin satoa, siksi kasvatan niitä siellä) vieressä maasta kasvavan väritattaren taimen. Olin keväällä laittanut käytävälle muovin estämään rikkaruohojen kasvua, ties kuinka monta väritattaren siementäkin sinne oli alle jäänyt eikä päässyt itämään:) Tällaiset rikkaruohot ovat kivoja.

Last summer I grew japanese indigo in big pots in my greenhouse, and the pointed leaf variety flowered there, and I got good seeds from it in the autumn. Apparently some of the seeds had ripened and dropped to the ground, and germinated at some point in the spring, because in June I noticed one plant growing there, by my sugarsnap peas (I grow them in the greenhouse, so that I get them earlier than outside, I have some also outside). I had put a black plastic in the path to prevent the weeds, and who knows now many japanese indigo seeds were under it, and couldn't germinate. I like these kinds of weeds:)

  1. Sepä on hienoa, että on näille kasveille otollinen vuosi!
Paljon kiitoksia ahdekaunokkipostauksesta, täälläkin sitä kasvaa hurumykky enkä ollenkaan tiennyt senkin olevan värjäyskasvi!

No, onneksi kohta pääsee keräämään satoa piiskuista.

  3. I love volunteers as I call them. I had a weld plant drop seed in my flower bed but didn't germinate for 2 years. A nice surprise. My JI is growing very well, we have had lots of rain and hot weather. I was wondering about using it to dye the bamboo yarn I mentioned before so I will test the leaves to see if it is ready. Snap peas are one of my favorites.

  4. Hi Tari,
wow, two years before weld germinated. I just posted about my weld plants which I sowed in the spring, and thought that they would not germinate, because they were so late, but I'm happy they did anyway, even if it took almost two months.
I'm sure that japanese indigo will dye bamboo yarn well (though I don't have my own experience about it), that is when the leaves are ready.
